Workshop: Strategies for Responding to Hostile Work Climates.
This interactive session will describe academic practices and institutional structures that allow for harassment, bullying and other hostile behaviors to persist, discuss initiatives to address harassment as research misconduct, and provide training in personal intervention strategies to protect and support targets of harassment. As a result of this session, participants will be able to identify: (1) different ways in which sexual and other types of harassment and bullying can manifest in research environments; (2) strategies for bystander intervention, and (3) resources to share with their home departments for cultural change. Led by members of the ADVANCEGeo Partnership with support from the Earth Science Women’s Network, Association of Women Geoscientists, and AGU.

The movie is available free for viewing the weekends of November 28th and December 12th – register here and learn more details. Picture a Scientist is a feature-length documentary film chronicling the groundswell of researchers who are writing a new chapter for women scientists. A biologist, a chemist and a geologist, lead viewers on a journey deep into their own experiences in the sciences, overcoming brutal harassment, institutional discrimination, and years of subtle slights to revolutionize the culture of science. From cramped laboratories to spectacular field stations, we also encounter scientific luminaries who provide new perspectives on how to make science itself more diverse, equitable, and open to all.
Following each weekend of free screening, panel discussions will feature guests associated with the film as well as experts on gender-based harassment to offer solutions-based thinking and strategies. These events are a collaboration of AGU, ESWN and 500 Women Scientists. More information is here.

Town Hall (TH012): How are We Doing and What Comes Next: Results from the ADVANCEGeo Survey of Work Experiences across Earth and Space Sciences
The Earth Science Women’s Network, Association for Women Geoscientists and the American Geophysical Union are partnering on the ADVANCEGeo project to address the problem of sexual harassment and other exclusionary behaviors that lead to hostile working and learning climates in the earth, space and environmental sciences with a four-year, $1.1 million grant from the National Science Foundation ADVANCE program. As part of this project, ADVANCEGeo administered a survey across the geosciences (via ESWN, AWG and AGU, as well as GSA, SSSA and other groups) to better understand the prevalence of hostile work environments (including in field work) and their impact in our community. This town hall will discuss preliminary results from the project and the survey.

Cultivating Leadership for Change and Justice in the Geosciences: Exploring Challenges to Diversifying Faculty
This workshop will bring together a panel of geoscientists who have had some success in diversifying their faculty. Panelists will reflect on the progress and challenges of hiring and successfully promoting diverse faculty, including recommendations for supporting the next generation of diverse geoscientists. Breakout groups will allow participants at different career stages to discuss the specific opportunities and obstacles related to recruiting and retaining diverse cohorts.

Innovative Session (INV15) – Moving Beyond the Standard: A Transdisciplinary Virtual Event for Early-Career Scientists
Our proposed innovative session aims to host a one-day event within the 2020 AGU Fall Meeting. This event will facilitate ECS collaboration between the AGU sections and neighborhoods by cultivating inclusive, transdisciplinary fellowship through research, networking, and mentoring opportunities. We aim to address three themes: fundamental research, public engagement, and pressing issues for ECSs (e.g., recruitment and retention, building collaborations). The event will include a mix of panel discussions, eLightening presentations, virtual posters, mentoring opportunities, and networking events. Although this event focuses on ECSs, most of the events will be open to all members of the AGU community in a hybrid (in-person and virtual) or virtual format. Select science communication sessions will be open to the general public. Mentoring and networking events will be limited to registered ECSs and other invited AGU community members.
WONDER Fund
ESWN recently lead a donation match campaign to raise funding for the WONDER Fund. With the generosity of our amazing members we raised $1250, and with the match we donated $2500 to the fund to support annual travel grants and mentorship opportunities for Black or Indigenous womxn in earth and space sciences. This annual award will aid recipients in attending an American Geophysical Union conference of their choice.
