Statement on Anti-Asian Violence

We want to recognize and offer our sincere support to Asian, Asian American and Pacific Islander (AAPI) communities who are hurting from continued discrimination and a prevalence of violence and anti-Asian hate that is reflected in the recent murders of eight individuals, including six Asian women, in Georgia on March 16, 2021. These events have been distressing and disturbing, and reflective of racist and misogynist culture that continues to perpetuate within the United States, including the racist rhetoric inaccurately tied to the COVID-19 pandemic. Acknowledging the systems of oppression is necessary before we can adequately address them. The Earth Science Women’s Network recognizes the hurt that continues to be felt by  the AAPI community. It is especially important in such times that we reaffirm our commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging. We must support each other as we continue to confront and combat racism, xenophobia, and discrimination — in our work environments as well as in the world around us. We can only advance if we advance together.
