This is the first time ESWN has run an event focused on the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation schemes, and we are looking forward to hosting this inaugural event.

*****PLEASE NOTE: This event is ESWN led and facilitated, and is not affiliated with the Alexander von Humboldt Foundation*****

Speakers

We will be joined by five speakers who either hold a fellowship/have held a fellowship previously, and who have experience assessing the fellowship applications.

  • Minu Treesa Abraham (Norwegian Technical Institute, Norway)
  • Susanne Crewell (Universität zu Köln, Germany)
  • Antje Schwalb (Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany)
  • Nina Papadomanolaki (Universität Münster, Germany)
  • Skye Yunshu Tian (Universität Bonn, Germany)

Agenda

The agenda for the event will be confirmed soon – it will include an introduction to the Humboldt Research Fellowship and Henrietta Herz Fellowship, as well as a panel discussion, and breakout room segment where attendees can meet our speakers in a breakout room.

Recording

All parts of this event (except the breakout rooms) will be recorded for asynchronous participation. A link will be made available to participants after the event.

Accessibility

This webinar will be fully closed captioned and will use colour blind friendly graphics.

Speaker bios

Minu Treesa Abraham (Norwegian Technical Institute, Norway)

Dr. Minu Treesa Abraham is a Geotechnical Research Engineer at the Norwegian Geotechnical Institute (NGI), Oslo. She was formerly an Alexander von Humboldt Fellow at RWTH Aachen University, and her PhD thesis earned the IGS-Prof. Leonard’s Annual Award 2022. She received the Outstanding Student Presentation Award at the American Geophysical Union (AGU) Fall Meeting 2021 and was featured in AGU’s Early Career Research Spotlight in June 2022. Dr. Abraham mentors young researchers in the 2024 Females Forward Humboldt Mentoring Program and she also serves as an editor for several esteemed journals including the Geological Journal, Gondwana Research, and Landslides.

Susanne Crewell (Universität zu Köln, Germany)

Professor Dr. Susanne Crewell holds the professorship for Meteorology at the University of Cologne. Her research is directed at a better understanding of the atmospheric water cycle by exploiting novel observation techniques from space, aircraft, and ground to bridge observations and modeling on different scales. She is involved in several major collaborative research projects and frequently acts as a reviewer for different science organizations, e.g., the German Research Foundation, EU, and Humboldt Foundation.

Antje Schwalb (Technische Universität Braunschweig, Germany)

Professor Dr. AntjeSchwalb is a geologist interested in the interactions between climate, landscape and humans, and her team works at the intersection of geo- and biosciences. They use remains of microfossils as bioindicators and geochemical proxies, archived in lake sediments, to assess the impacts of climate change and humans on aquatic ecosystems over time. Their research regions include Central Europe, the Americas and Central Asia. More recently, they have started to establish collaboration with Engineering and the humanities. Antje believes this is important for both her and her team, as being exposed to other perspectives fuels creativity and increases innovation in research and teaching.

Nina Papadomanolaki (Universität Münster, Germany)

Dr. Nina Papadomanolaki is a Dutch/Greek marine biogeochemist and climate modeler, currently working at the University of Münster in Germany.  She completed her Bachelors and Masters degrees at the University of Utrecht in the Netherlands. This is where Nina also did her PhD, working on causes of oxygen loss in ancient oceans and how this triggered mechanisms that reduced atmospheric CO2. After her PhD, Nina moved to France for two years for a post-doc at CEREGE, where she modelled ocean circulation and geochemistry. Nina is currently an Alexander von Humboldt Foundation Fellow in Münster where she models changes in weathering in the past.

Skye Yunshu Tian (Universität Bonn, Germany)

Dr. Skye Yunshu Tian is a paleobiologist working primarily on the Cenozoic marine ostracods. She received her PhD from the University of Hong Kong, and she is now a postdoctoral fellow at the University of Bonn supported by a Humboldt Fellowship. Skye is interested in using fossil ostracods as a model proxy to understand the interactions between past environmental changes and biotic responses. Her recent research focuses on the Cenozoic evolution of tropical shallow-marine biodiversity and biogeography.
